Janis Shen is of counsel at CoveyLaw, where she leads the Arts and Entertainment Practice. Her practice focuses on business affairs, strategic guidance for brand longevity, and transactional legal services for the Arts and Entertainment industry, which includes, among others, services in connection with performing arts centers, recording, publishing, production, artist licenses, producers, filmmakers, writers, composers, digital entertainment companies, business development, touring, and merchandising.
Janis founded her own law office in 2009 where she works principally in copyright law, intellectual property issues, business affairs, and all transactional legal services for the Entertainment and Media industries.
Before starting her own firm, Janis was a senior associate at the Law Offices of Howard Sadowsky, P.C., and she served as manager of Business Affairs Administration at RCA, RCA Victor, and Business Affairs at TVT Records.
Janis holds a J.D. from New York University, where she was co-founder of the Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Society, and received an Honors B.A. in literature from the University of Michigan. She is admitted to the New York State Bar and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
From 2000 to 2010, Janis served on the board of the Coalition of Asian and Pacifics in Entertainment, and was the Director of CAPENY, where she worked to foster diversity and inclusion in the Film and Media industries, as well as create networking and education opportunities for people of color in the Arts.
She also works within the Arts and Business communities to support and promote charitable organizations such as Stupid Cancer and other community-based charities.
